Managing information, in the internet era with explosive information availability demands special skills and calls for investments in strengthening the information infrastructure and skills of an organisation.

This specially designed course will teach participants on how to manage all aspects and types of information, at an institutional level and develop a virtual resource centre using open source tools and technologies.

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) with more than 25 years of experience in managing thousands books, articles, news clippings, video films, photographs and contact addresses. CSE is also the developer and manager of virtual information gateway “India Environment Portal (http://www.indiaenvironmentportal.org.in)”

Course content

Planning and managing resource centres in the digital age

Sourcing information (print/electronic, internet for research)

Organising Information: Classification & Indexing (including digitized resources)

A primer on managing audio-visual resources (films, photos, Cds, etc.)

Digitisation and e-documentation of news clippings, articles, reports and documents

Building contact databases

Knowledge creation and dissemination (Information Services/Products)

E-mail for outreach (mass mail using open source s/w)

Online presence : reaching out through the web

Potential of social media and web 2.0 for information dissemination and communication

Course fee

NGOs: Rs. 4,400 per participant
Corporate, government and international organizations: Rs 8,800 per participant
Accomodation and related costs are not included in the cost. However, CSE can help you find a place to stay.

The course fee should be paid in advance by demand draft/cheque in the name of CENTRE FOR SCIENCE AND ENVIRONMENT. (Add Rs.15 for all non-Delhi cheques)

I am very much indebted to the Centre for Science and Environment CSE as well as to the workshop organizing committee for selecting me as a fellow for the workshop on ‘Managing Information Resources in The Digital Age’ under the series of ‘Empowering Institutions: Training Programme on Library, Information Management and Web-based Outreach’ program. I obliged to the entire distinguished resources person who helped us in the last four days to explore more information, ideas, thoughts and knowledge on managing information resources as well as introducing with modern tools and techniques of knowledge management & web outreach in this digital era. We are very much lucky to have such experienced & learned teachers with us.

I am an information professional. I have to manage digital, online and electronic resources as my daily work. I have a greater interest in digital & electronic resource management and lack of proper training in my country motivated me to apply for this training program. The training program with Anil Agarwal Fellowships for South Asia also encouraged me more to apply for it.

The Anil Agarwal Fellowships for South Asian participants is one of the greatest initiatives taken by the CSE’s South Asian Program Wings. It is really very much helpful for South Asian participants to take part on this valuable training workshop to broaden their won knowledge of expertise with this fellowship. Actually this fellowship can be regarded as an access for capacity building tools to the participants who are from developing countries.

Group Discussion

The workshop has been a well structured with orientation towards the expanding cross-disciplinary area of information organization, dissemination, digital information management and web based outreach. The teaching methods and training curriculum is well thought-out. I believe that the training will widen my professional knowledge in other areas besides librarianship.

I am sure that what I have learnt in this program both theory and practical aspects of information management and web based outreach would make me a better professional in my area of specialization in my organization. All the participants were very friendly and helpful. I have made some good friends here and I have learned a lot of things from them. I take it as an opportunity to meet people from other South Asian courtiers and get some input that I might not get from any ordinary training workshop. I think it is important to know about other countries, their culture and how they do the same thing in different ways.

Taj Mahal

My experience in Delhi is really unforgettable. The weather was very nice. It’s expensive to live in Delhi but it is always a good learning experience in the capital of India. What I like most is the awareness about environment of CSE and its hospitality, the public transportation/communication system with metro rail services of Delhi, the various archeological survey of India including Taj Mahal, India Gate, Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Humayun Tombs, Lotus Temple etc.

We live in an age of information and communication technology where information is regarded as a power of live and technologies are the most divers tools for collecting, evaluating, organizing, representing and disseminating for the same in most convenient way. It has brought massive changes in our living style also. Now-a-days we can’t think our daily life without it. Technologies are reduces the possibility of huge information explosion. Technologies just guided us to work on the right track.

So, in this time we have to keep up-to-date ourselves with updated information to live a comfortable life. The training workshop organized by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is one of the most appreciable initiative. It is not only introduce the sources of information but also introduce with all the techniques for categorizing and using information with more effective way. The course also offered a variety of modern technology & tools to cope with the modern information management in this digital age.

The Anil Agarwal Fellowships for South Asian participant is another great initiative taken by the CSE. It helps to achieve the professional development of South Asian Perticipants.
